Not long ago, I rejoined the Sun-Times after more than four years away. Like most people who start a new job, on my first day I showed up for work in a well-planned outfit, which included my favorite piece: a Rodarte circle skirt I bought at Ikram last year (on sale, of course).
Continuing to want to make a good impression, in those early weeks I found myself pulling my nicest things out of my closet. I suppose I accidentally set the tone, because soon the Splash team members were all dressing up for work: the women in colorful dresses, the men in suits and skinny ties. Before long, a few women on the marketing team confided that we made them want to dress more formally. There seemed to be a shift in the office toward bigger heels, brighter hues and more break-room fashion talk.
I knew I wasn’t imagining it when I heard that another staffer had nicknamed our team “the Skirts.” Unsure of whether it was meant as a compliment (frankly, it reminded me of the Pink Ladies in “Grease,” and I briefly contemplated getting us all matching jackets), we decided to own it.
Now it’s become a rallying cry. When I know I have a long day ahead with crushing deadlines, I dress up. To me, jewelry is armor; cuff bracelets make me feel like Wonder Woman, cocktail rings make me type faster and long earrings make endless phone calls more bearable. I admit: A sky-high pair of heels gives me a head rush. And I believe any woman who hasn’t felt a power surge from wearing cat-eye makeup to work shouldn’t knock it.
So, on behalf of the Skirts (along with Zak and Ramzi, a.k.a. the Suits), I’d like to welcome you to the inaugural issue of Splash, which is dedicated to fall fashion. Future issues will focus on a broad range of themes — from real estate to auto to dining — but no matter what we’re covering, you know we’ll be serving it up weekly in high style.
