The annual event is always out of this world.
Success must have been written in the stars for the Adler Planetarium’s 10th annual Celestial Ball on Sept. 8, 2012. More than 800 partygoers — including Jim Lovell, the commander of NASA’s Apollo 13 mission — filled the planetarium’s Galileo café and Sundial Terrace, which offered a sweeping view of the Chicago skyline. Attendants dressed as astronauts sold raffle tickets and encouraged guests to bid on auction items, including an adorable puppy named Luna. Co-chairs Laura Myntti, Meg Sauer, Erika Bartelstein and Donna More were thrilled as the evening rocketed past their $1.2 million fund-raising target before the silent auction even started, making it the most successful Celestial Ball ever.
