Grocery stores have never been so stylish
Popular consultant Sue Leonis dug deep into her network to gather 200 VIP guests for a “Friends and Fall” party at Mariano’s Fresh Market (333 E. Benton) on Sept. 21. “There were grade school friends, political friends, business friends, my doorman… from Mike Madigan to Michael [‘Mickey’] Segal,” she says. Guests including M.K. Pritzker and Desiree Rogers went up to a roped-off area on the store’s swank second floor — designed by famed interior decorator Paul Klug — and sampled fare including the in-house Oki sushi brand (developed by the owners of Lincoln Square’s Tank Sushi) and shot glasses of butternut squash soup. After dinner, the Rhythm City band performed and an impromptu dance floor was packed with guests including Pam and John Cullerton and the Better Government Association’s Andy Shaw. For Leonis, the evening’s highlight was when a guest grabbed a grocery cart and formed a conga line followed by 20 or so partygoers. The dancing didn’t stop until nearly 1 a.m. — long after the store had closed.
