The Chicago auto-king takes a much-needed day to refuel
The McGrath name is everywhere: on billboards, television commercials and the license plates of most Lexuses and Acuras in the city. So it’s not surprising that Mike McGrath, one half of the dynamite power couple behind six Chicago area car dealerships (his wife, Kristina, manages all of the company’s public relations and customer service outreach), has a hectic week crammed with meetings, million-dollar deals and a slew of philanthropic galas, dinners and parties. The McGraths are behemoths in Chicago’s luxury car market; they own two of the Midwest’s biggest Lexus dealerships. The duo’s latest auto endeavor, a 28,000-square-foot Acura dealership at 1301 N. Elston, will celebrate its grand opening in mid-October, yet the showroom and service center are already up and running for anyone who hates to wait. A self-admitted type-A personality, McGrath makes it a point to embrace the slow moments in his week. “I love Sundays,” he says. “I work six days a week, so it’s my one day to recharge.” Here, he lays out his perfect Sunday.
8 a.m. It’s hard for McGrath to sleep in after his busy work week, so he wakes up to take his dogs, Koko and Harley, for a walk before reading the newspaper cover to cover.
NOON: Sunday football is a must-watch, and there’s only one team worth rooting for: da Bears.
2 p.m. Lunch with Kristina is a Sunday ritual. Typically the couple heads to dog-friendly RL Restaurant (115 E. Chicago).
4 p.m. The McGraths take a bike ride along the lake. The dogs tag along as well, riding in a basket on the front of each bike.
6 p.m. Mike reaps the rewards of his wife’s secret talent: making a killer burger.
10 p.m. A nature nut, Mike loves reading magazines like Scientific American or National Geographic before bed.
