If you are fortunate to have parents or grandparents who are still alive, call them. Stop reading right now and pick up the damn phone and call them. Tell them what you’re doing and that you’re thinking about them. I’ll wait…
OK. Now that you’ve done that, good job. You just made someone’s day…maybe their week or their month. The person you just called got a warm rush of emotion that (hopefully) isn’t filling up an adult diaper. It doesn’t matter if you have something to say. They probably think that phone calls are still charged at 50 cents a minute, so they won’t even talk that long. Even if it is a two-minute conversation, it makes a difference. Your parents, grandparents, neighbors and old friends will be absolutely uplifted if you simply quit playing Angry Birds for 90 seconds and call them just to say “hello.” When that crusty wrinkly person hangs up their phone, I guarantee that they will think, or even audibly say, “That was nice.” You will improve their life. You will have injected positive karma into the world. There will be a time when you pick up the phone and speed dial your mom or dad or grandma and that number is disconnected or there is no one there to pick it up. Take advantage of the gift of having that person pick up the phone just to say “hi.” It is the classic case of not knowing what you have until it is gone. You’ll feel good. They will feel better. Do it right now.
P.S. I wish there was Skype in Heaven. I miss you Grandpa.
