We all have something we keep putting on the backburner to eventually conquer. Whether it is to quit smoking, lose weight, exercise, save money, clean out your garage…you name it. We wait – sometimes years – before we actually do it. What’s yours? And why the hell haven’t you done it?
Now be aware of all the excuses you come up with: I don’t have the money, I don’t have time and I don’t have energy. Well, I’m guilty of the same excuses.
Whenever I put a goal ahead of me with a start date, I notice myself overindulging in the days that lead up to my “quit” date.
The worst are my diet quit dates. The night before, I’m in the car driving to my favorite fast-food joints gorging on Big Macs like I’m in an after-school special about gluttony.
I watched my girlfriend smoke three packs of cigarettes the night before her quit date. I can only imagine how much more addicted to nicotine she became right before she quit.
Why do we do this and what really are the best ways to kick a bad habit? Seeing that the New Year is coming, and we traditionally try to collectively eliminate something from our lives, how can we be successful this time around?
Post your ideas so maybe you can help me and the rest of us losers figure out how to win the war on quitting.
Let’s get it on!
