Do you ever have days where you can actually relate to those dumb celebrities that check themselves into a hospital for exhaustion? Has the thought of laying in one of those crunchy-sheet twin beds with people poking you and serving you salisbury steak with soggy green beans ever sounded like sheer paradise, simply because you knew you could nap all day without your phone ringing, your email dinging and people needing every ounce of your attention? Granted, these things would still be happening — you just wouldn’t have to deal with it because doctor’s orders are for you to “get some rest.”
I laugh hysterically at the thought of getting some rest. It doesn’t happen often these days, because I have always been one to hold myself accountable to all of my obligations and let me tell you, there is a heaping pile of obligation and deadline waiting for me each morning.
I recently read an article about physically scheduling nothing on your calendar and how life-changing it can be. The “nothing” is scheduled in small increments throughout the day — 15 minutes here, 45 minutes there — and it truly needs to be no form of activity. People like me that think we’re giving ourselves time to do nothing really aren’t doing that. My nothing consists of scarfing down a quick lunch or sitting down to check my email, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram feeds with my mind still running at 100 mph. Maybe I need help remembering what doing nothing actually feels like, and how to allow myself to do this periodically throughout my day.
I think a little more yoga, meditation and day dreaming are what my doctor needs to order for me.
