The actor breaks out in ‘If I Stay’ this weekend.
Jamie Blackley has all the makings of a Hollywood leading man — dashing looks, a charming British accent and musical abilities to boot — and it’s likely that this weekend will cement his celebrity status: His latest film, “If I Stay,” debuted in theaters Friday. In the film, Blackley, 23, and Chloë Grace Moretz play young musicians learning the meaning of love in the face of tragedy. Prepare to swoon.
I was born on the Isle of Man and grew up in South London. A friend of my mom [sent] her kids to a theater school and I asked if I could go. I started going every Saturday, then went to a high school for the performing arts. I remember finding it really scary, going on a bunch of commercial auditions and never really getting anywhere.
I couldn’t get a job for the life of me. I got the script for ‘If I Stay’ in my email — they wanted me to self-tape [an audition] — and I ignored it because I thought, ‘There’s no point, I’m not gonna get [the part] anyway.’ They followed up and eventually got me in with a casting director in London, then a week later I flew to LA to meet with [the producers] and do a chemistry read with Chloë, which was really nerve-wracking.
We shot [‘If I Stay’] in Vancouver. I went up early to record the songs and vocals, and we were there for two or three months overall. Everyone got on really well. I’ve played the guitar since I was 12 or so — when we did the concert scenes it was half playback, half live.
Oh my God, everyone! There’s not a movie I’ve watched where I haven’t said ‘That person is so good at this or that.’ … I’ve still got so much to learn and can only learn more by working with people who know what they’re doing.
I play a lot of football, I watch a lot of football, I think a lot about football. I’ve played all my life, since I can remember. [My favorite team is] Crystal Palace FC. Crystal Palace FC! You’ve probably never heard of them but they mean everything to me. Wow, that even rhymed. It’s like poetry.
See “If I Stay” in theaters now.
