For 20 years, the red brick Ronald McDonald House near Loyola University Medical Center (2160 S. 1st, Maywood) has been a home away from home for families and children facing serious medical crises. On July 18, the organization welcomed past families, community members, volunteers and founding board members to commemorate the anniversary.
Attendees celebrated the occasion with live music from the Karl Mauer Band and appearances from special guests Jorrie Reed, 2014 Miss Plus America; an Elvis impersonator; and Ronald McDonald himself. The family-friendly fête also offered carnival games for the little ones and, of course, plenty of birthday cake. House tours showed off the comfortable living spaces and a newly remodeled kitchen, proving that — at least in the case of this Ronald McDonald House — things really do get better with age.
Saturday was very special for us – celebrating our “home away from home.” It was moving to see how many other families have been impacted by this supportive community —and the new kitchen is just stunning!
