Last week, fireworks erupted as the Chicago White Sox scored in the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, marking a scorching struggle between the two teams that finally ended in a 6-5 10th inning victory for the home team. But things started heating up well before that first homerun, when new Victoria’s Secret Angel and Palatine native Taylor Hill approached the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Hill, in town to promote the new “Body by Victoria” line, began her day at 6:30 a.m., appearing on two morning shows, attending the White Sox game and meeting fans at Victoria’s Secret (734 N. Michigan), all before catching a flight home to LA. In the midst of her jam-packed day, the model — sporting a ballcap, Converse and a VS sequined Sox tank — sat down with Splash to talk about her favorite runway experience, why Gisele is the best and more.
SPLASH: What was your reaction when you learned you were going to be the newest VS Angel?
Taylor Hill: I was shocked and I didn’t believe them when they told me. I thought they were kidding with me and I was like, “Stop lying!” That was my reaction.
S: What do you like most about the job so far?
TH: I love the people. It’s kind of like a big family and you get to see familiar faces every day. You get to work and travel and do cool things like this, and the exposure is great as a model.
S: Which VS models do you look up to the most?
TH: I love Behati [Prinsloo] and Candice [Swanepoel], and my all-time favorite is Gisele [Bündchen] — she just works it, she just knows. There’s something about her and how she’s got an energy and a light about her. You can’t help but idolize her, because she’s so beautiful and she knows how to handle herself.
S: What is it like traveling the world now?
TH: It’s eye-opening, because when you grow up in America, you don’t realize there’s a different lifestyle; when I go to Europe I’m culture-shocked every time I go. It’s really fun too, because otherwise when would I ever have the chance to see the world and see so much of it? My favorite place I’ve been is Cape Town [South Africa] — I went there for a week with my mom for a shoot when I was 17 and it was an amazing experience.
S: What is your favorite runway show you’ve walked in so far?
TH: My all-time favorite was Alexander McQueen, because I’ve always wanted to do that and I never thought that I would because their style is very high, high-fashion and my whole life I’ve been told, “You’re too commercial.” But last season I booked McQueen and it was amazing!
S: What advice do you have for young girls trying to break into the industry?
TH: I would say don’t wear any makeup and don’t touch your hair [or] eyebrows. Always stand up straight and be confident, and don’t be afraid to smile or crack some jokes. That’s how I land half my jobs — that’s how I got this job. So just be yourself!
S: What are your must-have VS products?
TH: The new Body by Victoria oil [Victoria’s Secret Weightless Body Oil, $18] is my favorite thing. I’ve used oil for three years; I use it to hydrate my skin and it makes it really soft.
