Jennifer Borders woke up June 2, 2014, while on vacation in Puerto Rico, with one dreaded thought: “Oh my god, I’m turning 35.” So she turned to her boyfriend Troy Flick for encouragement. “Tell me 35 things you love about me,” she joked. After telling her the 34th reason, he said he’d think about the last and took her on a walk on the beach. “[I saw] something written in the sand with peonies, and he got down on one knee and told me the 35th thing he loved about me and proposed,” says Borders, the PR director for Kimpton Hotels.
For Flick, an architect and project designer for Ware Malcolmb, the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing (111 S. Michigan) was the obvious venue for their June 6 nuptials; keeping with the vibe of the space, the couple opted for a minimalistic, modern theme with a neutral palette. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds released 100 butterflies to honor the groom’s late nieces, Ariel and Valerie.
