It was a perfect summer romance: Natalie Mazzarella, 30, senior manager of communications and events at SKOOG Productions, flew to Greece in June 2009 to study at the American College of Thessaloniki. There — walking along a port on the Aegean Sea — she met fellow student, Bostonian Antonios Poulakos, 31. But unlike so many summer flings, the sun didn’t set on their love: “I came to Chicago at the end of that summer, thinking I’d never see him again,” Mazzarella says. “[But] I was on a plane to Boston for the first time two days later.”
Over the next six years, the couple flew back and forth between Boston and Chicago, traveling every other weekend to see each other. So it was only fitting that their May 14 wedding at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral (1017 N. LaSalle) — and later, a reception at Spiaggia (980 N. Michigan) — infused their love of travel. A data research/GIS analyst at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Poulakos created the table place cards, each depicting a map of a city the pair has been together.
The affair wouldn’t have been complete without a lot of Greek dancing and a sweets table full of Italian and Greek treats like cannolis and diples.
