Ever After: Roda Cunanan & Nathan Fan

By / Weddings / July 28, 2016

It became a love story for the ages when Nathan Fan, 33, proposed to Roda Cunanan in the grand ballroom of the Chicago History Museum (1601 N. Clark) in April 2015. Cunanan, a senior psychosocial rehabilitation instructor and mental health counselor at Neumann Family Services, was lured to the museum by her best friend under the guise of attending a charity fundraiser. “She said there [would be] bottomless mimosas,” the bride laughs.

Instead, Cunanan, 30 — who Fan describes as a Chicago history buff — walked into the empty ballroom to find Fan, a principal consultant at data management firm Clarity Solution Group, standing in a suit. “I still didn’t know what was going on until I saw his best friend in the corner recording everything,” Cunanan says.

Appropriately, the pair’s June 25 nuptials and reception at the JW Marriott Chicago (151 W. Adams) were rooted in history as well, albeit history of a more personal kind. Cunanan incorporated references to the couple’s past, from choosing vendors located in Old Town, where they met in January 2012, to displaying photographs of their parents’ weddings and their grandparents at the reception. They achieved the classic romantic feel they were going for with flowers by Juliet Tan floral design and decor in shades of navy, gold and white.
