AGE: 37. LIVES IN: Winnetka. CLAIM TO FAME: Founder and owner of Kara Mann-designed womenswear retail space, Athene (837 Elm, Winnetka), which opened last fall. CREATIVE SPARK: The boutique — named for the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena — started as a passion project for Quicksilver. “I [was] a stay-at-home mom for nine years,” she says. “I got this wacky idea to open a women’s clothing store and went with it. I’ve [always] been really into fashion and styling friends and family, so when the thought occurred to me, it just clicked. It was the first space I looked at and I knew right away it was perfect.”
WHAT’S IN STORE: The boutique displays a well-edited mix of timeless, feminine pieces: a leather sandal line by Greek label Valia Gabriel, denim by R13 and casual wear by Nili Lotan. It also offers a curated collection of jewelry and accessories, like handcrafted pieces by local designer Sarah McGuire and handbags by Perrin Paris. “We’ve got everything from edgy, worn-in, broken-in pieces, to more refined ladylike pieces,” Quicksilver says. “[The collections] are pretty intermixable and just really easy to wear — nothing super trendy.” SPRING TO LIFE: This season, Quicksilver introduces new designers to the space, including Israeli line Dodo Bar Or, known for its printed silk dresses, and Tulum, Mexico-based beachy clothing label Caravana. Plus, the boutique is the only store in the Chicago area to carry Wendelborn, a knitwear and silk clothing company (whose co-owner is from Lake Forest). FRESH TRENDS: Stock up on comfortably luxe pieces, Quicksilver says, like a denim kimono by Cali-based NSF ($395), a Caravana linen hooded cape ($388) or an oversized blue-and-white striped cold shoulder top by Atea Oceanie ($295).
