Most brides spend weeks or even months searching for the perfect dress, but Kati Olson didn’t try hers on until the morning of her wedding. Though she’d planned to walk down the aisle in a different gown, she stumbled upon the dress of her dreams — a ’50s-inspired mermaid style from Pinup Girl Clothing (Pinupgirlclothing.com) — online just days before the ceremony.
Olson, 40, assistant director of public affairs at the Art Institute of Chicago, and her boyfriend of seven years, David Lidstrom, 51, a data company exec, were in no hurry to get married — it was their children, 8-year-old Teagan and 5-year-old Vaughn, who kept asking when they’d make things official. “Our son started picking out clothes that he wanted to wear when we got married,” Olson laughs.
On July 1, the kids got their wish when the pair, who met at a Blackhawks game more than eight years ago, said their vows at Sunrise Park and Beach (455 Sunrise, Lake Bluff). The day was casual, fun and tropical — the bride even jumped on a paddle board in her dress. “We had people who showed up in T-shirts and shorts and [others] who showed up in cocktail dresses,” Olson says. “It was very come-as-you-are.”
