On a balmy, late-summer night, 1,000 guests — many donning shades of green — toasted the work of local nonprofit Chicago Gateway Green and raised $300,000 to continue its mission of beautifying Chicago’s expressways. Co-chaired by Beth Heller and Jacky Ferro (wife of Splash parent company Tronc chairman Michael Ferro) at Artifact Events (4325 N. Ravenswood), the 26th annual event was boosted by star power: Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney auctioned an autographed fire helmet, and DJ White Shadow (a producer and songwriter for Lady Gaga) brought surprise guests like the rapper Twista to keep the crowd dancing late into the night.
Get this: Gateway Green has planted more than 4,000 trees, 80,000 shrubs and 130,000 perennials along with the removal of over 1.3 million pounds of litter for the city of Chicago.
