Ever After: Courtney Subramanian & Davey Quinn

By / Weddings / November 13, 2017

Courtney Subramanian knew who Davey Quinn was before they ever met — if for a somewhat dark reason. During her first quarter at Northwestern University, Subramanian was assigned to write the obituary of a famous person from her hometown of Hinsdale. The catch? The person still had to be alive. One month after penning the obituary of Davey’s father — 41st governor of Illinois Pat Quinn — Subramanian met Davey. A mutual friend introduced the two saying, “This is the girl who wrote your dad’s obituary.”

“At first, I was taken aback,” laughs Quinn. “But I walked away from the conversation thinking she was pretty cute.”

Subramanian, 32, a news editor at BBC News, and Quinn, director of investments United Income, had a few more run-ins after their initial introduction in July 2010. Subramanian was assigned to an election night that November at Hotel Allegro (171 W. Randolph). The governor’s son offered to buy Subramanian a drink, but she declined. “One, I’m working, and two, they’re free,” Subramanian remembers saying. They finally did have that drink together in December, and the rest is history.

Though they now live in Washington, D.C., the couple returned to Chicago for their late summer wedding at the Garfield Park Conservatory (300 N. Central Park). “It was really emotional to have all these different components of our life [come] together in Chicago,” Subramanian says.

Honoring the bride’s Indian heritage, 200 partygoers were treated to delicacies like kishmish, cauliflower and cumin fritters with curried aioli and samosas, and bridesmaids donned traditional Mehndi. The evening concluded with an emotional toast from the groom: “We’ve been all over the world and have encountered all the people in this room. But no matter where we are, I know I’m always at home with you.”
