If you watch Bravo’s “Southern Charm,” you already know Shep Rose. The charming and charismatic South Carolina bachelor has it all going for him: good looks, revered aptitude, the “Saturdays are for the boys” sensibility and a sophisticated taste for the finer things in life. All he needs now is a female counterpart who meets his — highly particular — standards.
In a new spinoff, “RelationShep,”— premiering tonight on Bravo — Rose steps outside Charleston (and his comfort zone) to find a girl who can check off all his boxes; he’ll travel cross-country to test out a new, yet quite traditional, dating approach. The 37-year-old promises viewers they’re going to meet the true Shep this time. “I think my real personality shines through,” he says. “I don’t go on a whole hell of a lot of dates typically. This was one-on-one and really getting to know somebody and hearing about their life and not having a football game on in the background or what have you. You’re locked in, you’re fully engaged with this person and that’s obviously the best way to get to know somebody. It’s way more effort than I usually put out.”
Frequently faced with the interrogation of why he’s 37 and still single, Rose explains, “I don’t know what to say to that other than the fact that I’m not really big on making a mistake because society thinks I should be married or whatever. That’s sort of my retort to that. But it’s a valid question and boy does it come up a whole lot.”
We played a little Tinder game with Shep, who swiped left (bad) and right (good) on the qualities he’s looking for in his next soulmate.
Lives with her parents: That’s tough, because I graduated business school [during] a really hard time in the economy and my parents were kind enough to take me in for a few months. [But] I’ll say swipe LEFT.
Lives outside of Charleston: RIGHT all day!
Watches Bravo or “Southern Charm”: RIGHT.
Doesn’t like to read: LEFT.
Has kids: Kids as in plural, LEFT. One kid, RIGHT.
Picky eater: LEFT. It’s sort of unsophisticated to not try and enjoy other cuisines.
Disinterested in politics: LEFT. You have to know what’s going on in the world 100 percent. That’s a big turn on for me. Being able to sit around and, even if you disagree, tell me why and what led you to that decision. I feel a certain way about certain things. We don’t have to get into it; follow me on Twitter and you’ll find out.
Has dated “Southern Charm” cast members Thomas, Craig or Austen: Swipe LEFT! That just happened to me. I was going to an event and I invited a girl and little did I know that Austen had a fling with her. I had to find an excuse not to go to the event — I felt bad. Here’s the thing on that: Obviously you’re never going to be the only guy who’s ever been with this person. But you don’t want it to be so close to home.
As to whether Shep finds love for real or if a Season 2 is on the horizon? Playing coy, Rose says, “We’ll talk again after it’s all said and done, how about that.”
Catch “RelationShep” Mondays at 9 p.m. on Bravo.
