AGE: 40. LIVES IN: New York City. GREW UP IN: Gold Coast. CLAIM TO FAME: Founder and creative director of contemporary e-shop Boy Meets Girl (Boymeetsgirlusa.com), which launched in 2001 and has garnered a celebrity following, from Kendall Jenner to Mindy Kaling. RUNNING START: “I wanted to be in fashion since I was three,” Igel says. “I would go to Vogue Fabrics in Water Tower Place and buy fabrics. I made my first skirt by hand and wore it to my first day of sixth grade.” In high school, she took design and art classes at Columbia College and the Art Institute of Chicago; after graduating from the University of Wisconsin, she moved to New York and worked for Izod and Elie Tahari before launching her own line. NAME CALLING: Igel came up with the name and logo for her brand by chance. “I was dating my husband at the time and he invited me to his house to meet his parents,” Igel remembers. “On his wall, he had silhouettes of his brother and sister. He was a graphic designer [now a lawyer], so when we got home we started playing with the logo, which ended up being [silhouettes based on] me and him as children.” THE LINE: Boy Meets Girl was created as a modern streetwear brand with a philanthropic purpose — a portion of its proceeds benefit the National School Climate Center, Young Survival Coalition and other organizations — and top sellers include crop sweatshirts, graphic tees, tanks and sweatpants. TEAM PLAYER: Key to Igel’s success have been her many collaborations: Last year, she created an athleisure line for Macy’s and launched a 10-piece capsule collection featuring images of ’90s model Veronica Webb photographed by Sophie Elgort, sister of “The Fault in Our Stars” actor Ansel Elgort. “[Sophie] is the daughter of Arthur Elgort — he’s a famous photographer who shot Webb in the ’90s for Vogue, so we did this whole full-circle moment of shooting in his studio.” COMING UP: Now, Igel is diving into the home world with a new line of throw pillows, bedding and towels — most marked the signature Boy Meets Girl silhouettes — launching in April. Pre-orders have already sold out, but expect another launch later this year.
