Though Kiran Pinto, 37, and Cory Morris, 36, both work in the restaurant industry — she’s a managing partner with Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants and he’s the chef at Boleo (122 W. Monroe) — that’s, surprisingly, not what brought them together.
“The Chicago culinary scene is such a tight-knit community; I’m surprised we never met each other,” Morris says. “We met the old-fashioned way: online!” Pinto was late for their first date at The Purple Pig because she was in the kitchen expediting dishes at a new restaurant. “He thought that was pretty sexy,” she laughs.
After Morris proposed on their two-year anniversary last summer, the couple planned a laid-back destination wedding for 21 guests at Casa Yardena in Tulum, Mexico, on Feb. 21. “My biggest rule for the day was if it causes stress, the answer is ‘no,’ ” Pinto says.
Guests wore all white and Morris assumed that Pinto would, too; instead, she surprised him with a breezy Rachel Comey silk dress in striking marigold. “In India, marigold is a color of celebration,” says Pinto, who is of Indian, Irish and Scottish descent. After a ceremony officiated by their friend, Marchesa chef Mark Sabbe, they sabered Champagne on the beach and had a family-style dinner, featuring fire-roasted cauliflower with red mole and slow-roasted pork belly with sweet-and-sour pineapple. They kept the celebration going with drinks from the mezcal bar and lively gypsy jazz.—Lisa Arnett
