Chicagoan Sevgi Sipahi and Holland-born Sinan Tokbay, both 31, met while studying abroad in Istanbul and wed at River Roast (315 N. LaSalle) in a spring ceremony honoring their Turkish heritage.
Members of both their families took part in a traditional engagement ring ceremony, DJ Karin from Toast & Jam spun a mix of American and Turkish music, and their 194 guests went home with Turkish candy dishes as favors.
The bride’s feathered pink gown was a custom design by good friend Rakan Shams Aldeen — a designer-in-residence at the Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy’s on State Street — made with beaded fabric purchased at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar.
Sipahi is finishing her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Lutheran General Hospital; Tokbay, a senior consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Istanbul, plans to move to Chicago later this year.
