GREW UP IN: Chicago (Anisa) and London (Suhail). NOW LIVE IN: Ravenswood. CLAIMS TO FAME: Anisa, a former chemical engineer, forayed into skin science and opened her own studio, NŪR Skincare, in L.A. She now brings it to Chicago with her architect husband, Suhail, who made a name for himself here in the late ’90s designing restaurants like Tizzi Melloul and Sonotheque. TRUE PARTNERS: “We wanted to tie together past and present, design and wellness … create something completely unique.” A RADIANT APPROACH: “Nūr” means light in Arabic (both Anisa and Suhail are Pakistani). It’s also exactly what the studio’s signature 12-step high-tech facial ($225) will bring out in clients. “It includes chemical peels, LED light therapy, microdermabrasion. We push the skin to its limits to force it to regenerate.” THINKING HOLISTICALLY: “We support the mind-body experience and consult with herbalists, acupuncturists, and naturopaths. It’s an integrative approach,” says Anisa, a rare protégé of famed NYC aesthetician Dangene, who works with Madonna. DESIGNED TO INSPIRE: The space is truly singular — and soothing. Accented by carved wood, it features Sufi art and Kufic elements reflective of the couple’s cultural heritage. A MATCH MADE IN PHILANTHROPY: The two met in 2007, around when Suhail was exiting the restaurant-design game (“I was burned out and wanted to be in full control,” he says). He formed a nonprofit called Actual Size that builds schools for needful communities globally. “I ended up traveling to Kashmir with him for a project. When I got back, I felt like I had a new lease on life.” TO L.A. AND BACK: A salon-design project landed the two in Santa Monica for a while, but “we missed our friends in Chicago,” says Anisa. “Here, it’s easier to get around and experience culture.” FREE TIME, FAMILY TIME: The couple has a five-year-old daughter, Leila, who they take to Chicago Children’s Museum and Museum of Science and Industry. They also love venturing to Argyle and Broadway for pho. NEXT UP: NŪR will expand into a wellness center featuring a café, childcare, yoga, and more.
