Kathleen Kenehan Henson and Chris Sarpy almost never met at all.
A mutual acquaintance suggested that Henson, 48, founder and CEO of communications firm Agency H5, meet Sarpy, 47, for lunch while he was in town from Dallas. Henson was jetting to another meeting and nearly bailed; Sarpy considered canceling to make an earlier flight. Instead, they sat down together for a mere 20 minutes and their lives changed forever.
“I felt we really completely connected on a spiritual level,” Sarpy says. “I was really interested in her and perplexed by her and just the energy she gave off — I had never felt anything like it.” Henson adds, “He walked away and I just kind of missed him immediately.” After many texts and FaceTime calls, and a trip to Paris, they fell in love. Just when the distance was becoming too hard to bear, Sarpy was offered a job in Chicago as Midwest sales director at medical technology company ViewRay.
Henson has five children and Sarpy has one son, both from previous marriages, and it seems they were destined to become one big, beautiful blended family. “I wanted six children my whole life,” Henson says. “We couldn’t have gotten any luckier.” Their children stood by their sides during a July 14 ceremony for 40 at St. James Farm (2S541 Winfield, Warrenville) performed by Henson’s 89-year-old uncle, the Reverend William Beattie. Henson wore her late parents’ wedding rings pinned to her dress over her heart, and her oldest son, John Henry, 18, walked her down the aisle.
They celebrated at an open-house reception for 300 at the couple’s Wheaton home, where planner Debi Lilly decked out the backyard with two white tents, cocktail tables, and twinkling lights. In lieu of gifts, guests donated to Breakthrough Urban Ministries and Enchanted Backpack, two of the couple’s favorite charities.
