Ever After: Michael J. Anderson & Joseph Andrew Caruso

By / Weddings / December 15, 2016

When Michael J. Anderson and Joseph Andrew Caruso heard that Paris city officials were going to tear down the famous wall of love locks on the Pont des Arts bridge, they promptly booked a trip in the fall of 2014 to attach their own padlock. But there was even more romance in store: Just after throwing the key into the Seine, Anderson, 51, professional fundraiser at the Chicago History Museum, asked Caruso, 26, sales associate at Hermès, to marry him. “He started to cry,” Anderson remembers. “I think he suspected it, but not there or then.”

The couple’s close friend Raymond Vas officiated their Oct. 15 wedding at the Chicago History Museum (1601 N. Clark), and another friend, Jennifer Goodman, recited an excerpt from “Romeo & Juliet.” “Everyone did a beautiful job of making it humorous, but at the same time solemn and very special,” Anderson says.

Later that day, their 150 guests convened at PUBLIC Hotel (1301 N. State) for an intimate brunch to celebrate the newlyweds. “I couldn’t believe it was happening and that we could actually be married as two men,” he says. “I never thought I would see that or we would have the opportunity.”
