By the time the new year rolled around, Roxanne Abesamis was a little tired of waiting for her boyfriend of six years, Edward Popkiewicz, to pop the question. “I [thought], ‘It’s 2016, he’s not going to propose, and I’m still waiting — here’s another year,’ ” says Abesamis, 30. But, as with many things, it happened when she least expected it.
On Jan. 2, Popkiewicz, a CPA at Ernst & Young, ordered the special of the day at doughnut shop Glazed & Infused (30 E. Hubbard). “They came out with one of the giant ones they make for birthday cakes and it said, ‘Will you marry me?’ on it,” says Abesamis, social media specialist for Mariano’s.
Ten months later on Nov. 11, the couple traveled with 95 guests for a wedding at Riviera Palm Springs, about a two-hour drive from the bride’s hometown of Walnut, California. The ceremony had a tropical motif, with the bride’s and flower girl’s pineapple shoes, the groomsmen’s pineapple socks, the capiz lotus lantern decor and even the wedding hashtag, #Alohapopz.
Abesamis surprised her new husband with a hula dance, but the real excitement came later. “We ended up jumping into the pool at the end of the night,” Abesamis says.
