Ioanna Demertzis and Petros Diakatos were just kids when they met through mutual friends in the Greek community in Chicago. “I was 11 and Petro was 15,” says Demertzis, 27, architectural designer at roomTEN design. “He and my sister were the same age and used to be friends, so we’ve known each other our whole lives.”
As they grew older, Demertzis and Diakatos, 31, who works at STK Chicago, lost touch — until one night in January 2015. “We saw each other at Lou Malnati’s in the Gold Coast,” the bride laughs. “I was there with my friends, he was there with his, and we started dating a month later.”
They stayed close to home for an engagement party at The Empress (200 E. Lake, Addison), but went back to their roots for their July 29 wedding in Evia, Greece. “In Greece, you can have a more laid-back wedding without an early out time like in America,” the bride says. Theirs lasted until 8 a.m., complete with the groom jumping in the pool with 15 of his family and friends, and guests snacking on late-night gyros and souvlaki.
The party continued all week, as the couple hosted a “friendmoon” with their closest guests to Chania and Mykonos before jetting off on their own to Mallorca and Barcelona.
