Their first date in May 2013 was at Guthrie’s Tavern (1300 W. Addison), well known for its selection of board games. Rozman was running late, and texted Wendle to pick one out.
“It provoked a minor freakout on my part,” laughs Wendle, 32, operations manager at property management firm SMS Assist. “It couldn’t be so engaging that we couldn’t talk, but it also couldn’t be too juvenile.”
His choice, Connect Four, helped seal their personal connection, and three hours flew by. “It was just such a relief,” says Rozman, 32, an attorney for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “I thought, ‘This is what it’s like to go on a date with a good man.’ ”
The couple, who met on OkCupid, bonded over a shared love of pop culture, especially Harry Potter. Even before getting engaged in May 2016, they joked about a themed wedding — but once they began planning, fantasy became reality.
Their fitting venue, The Library (190 S. LaSalle), was decorated to resemble Hogwarts and other locales from the book, a magic wand was tied to each place card and DIY paper flowers made from book pages were incorporated into the floral. The couple also added some traditional elements, including Rozman’s ivory lace and tulle ballgown.
“Seeing her in the dress as she came down the stairs, I didn’t really have any words,” Wendle says. A fantasy, indeed.
